Alexandre Romain Crochon, commissaire du Directoire dans le département de l'Eure

Alexandre Romain Crochon, who was the first central superintendent of the Eure, held the function from Brumaire Year 4th (October 1795) to Germinal Year 6th (april 1798). Having a lot of power all over the department, this former federalist, who was a native of Pont-Audemer always worked with the help of the Central Administration, he had to control. Placed at the top of the network of the district commissaries, Crochon worked in lots of domains and he never hesitated to go and visit the districts which had been "infested with bandits". He was the man of the happy milieu, particularly hostile to the royalists, but frightened too, by the new-jacobin audacity. He looked for the conciliation more than the confrontation. At the beginning of his commissionership, he was supported by all the republicans but then his action was contested by the new-jacobins after Fructidor. The Bulletin of the Eure, published by Touquet didn't spare him, claiming for his destitution. But he escaped from it and then was elected at the Council of the Five-Hundred.
