Abstract This book offers clear, accessible answers to the many questions that arise regarding amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), from diagnosis through the progression of the disease. ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Written by a neurologist with decades of clinical experience and a caregiver who supported a parent with ALS, the book explores what is known about factors leading to ALS, assistive technologies, as well as the process of making informed decisions about respiratory support and end-of-life care. New sections also explain the latest research, including the role of genetic mutations and other genetic factors, and the development of new treatments, in language that is easy to understand.
