Verbal Processes in a Labour/Management Negotiation
View through CrossRef
The transcript of a labour/management negotiation was analysed using Stiles's verbal response modes (VRM) taxonomy to assess the value of general-purpose discourse analysis in studying negotiation processes. Temporal trends and labour/management differences in response mode use indicated that VRM coding successfully quantified important aspects of the negotiation. Comparisons were made between the results of VRM analysis and those of more specialised methods for analysis of discourse in negotiations.
