The Temporal Influence of Resource Organization in Patenting by Chilean Universities

View through CrossRef
Academic patenting is a contemporary issue due to its capacity to enhance university funding, drive innovation, and promote economic and social development. While previous research has explored the effect of various resources on university patenting, these studies have predominantly focused on the United States and Europe, often examining resources in isolation or for a limited duration. In Latin America, however, this phenomenon is more recent and provides an empirical opportunity to examine longitudinally the early stages of university resource configuration to encourage patenting. This article builds upon previous studies to comprehensively analyse the influence of different organizational resources on university patenting across Chile. We examine five key resources, drawn from the literature, across 38 Chilean public and private universities from 2013 to 2022. Our objective was to examine the evolution, strategic management and temporal influence of these resources. Using negative binomial regression models, the results indicate that qualified human resources are the most significant factor in the emergence of university patenting across Chile. We highlight key differences in resource significance and deployment between private and public universities and conclude that a consideration of institutional evolution can yield new insights for patent performance research and policy.
