Abstract
BY the outbreak of the Civil War in 1642 Lawes had reached a peak. His settings of lyrics by Herrick, Carew, Waller, and other cavalier poets had seemingly achieved an ideal, one which the poets themselves acknowledged and fellow musicians accepted as a model. It would be wrong to say that from then on he was content to repeat himself—there was the matter of recitative and its application to opera to explore—but in other respects it was a period of consolidation, and even, to some extent, of retreat.
