A Review of Rsearch on Nuo Xi in Japan

View through CrossRef
This paper focuses on the study of Japanese Nuo Xi, exploring its cultural connotations, historical evolution, and a comparative perspective between China, Japan, and Korea. It points out that Nou Xi is not a common term in Japan, where research typically uses expressions like chasing Nuo or driving away ghosts, integrating Buddhism, Shinto, and folk customs, closely related to performances like "Dano" and "Saru-no". The paper divides Noh rituals into two major systems: court and temple, detailing their historical origins and academic findings. It analyzes the Chinese origin of court Nuo and its localization in Japan, as well as the repentance rituals of temple Nuo. The paper concludes with future research directions from the Nuo theater perspective, emphasizing the importance of exploring the translation and dissemination mechanisms of Nuo culture in Japan.
