One major question comes out when one considers contemporary martyrdom operations: why Islam? Hatina's book is an excellent survey of the theoretical and religious source material on Islamic martyrdom. Hatina places the study of Islamic martyrdom squarely within overarching theoretical frameworks, and does so with a full command of the primary source materials. This marriage was not previously accomplished with regard to Islamic martyrdom.
