The Truth About Low Intelligence: The Causes and Manifestations of Biological Low Intelligence and Instruction-Induced Low Intelligence

View through CrossRef
Old theories of talent not only mystify high intelligence; they also stigmatize low intelligence. They often reduce various forms of cognitive limitation, learning difficulty, slow understanding, and weak transfer ability to being "born inferior." Within the framework of the New Theory of Talent and Intelligence, this paper proposes a new analytical approach to low intelligence by distinguishing two essentially different conditions: biological low intelligence and instruction-induced low intelligence. It further analyzes their different causes and manifestations. <div> Biological low intelligence refers to cases in which abnormal brain development, major nervous-system impairment, or significant biological limitations in early life make it difficult for advanced algorithms to form normally. It is a form of antecedent limitation. It usually manifests as broad functional difficulty across learning, understanding, expression, adaptation, daily living, and social interaction, and requires coordinated support from medicine, rehabilitation, special education, and society. Instruction-induced low intelligence refers to a condition in which a child does not originally suffer from severe biological intellectual disability, but through long-term educational and learning distortions, the child’s systems of understanding, representation, rule formation, and strategy formation are continuously suppressed, weakened, and dulled, eventually producing a state of functional low intelligence. It is a form of process induced suppression. It may become widespread, but more often it appears as domain-specific low intelligence: in domains severely polluted by harmful instruction, the child appears dull, confused, passive, or incapable, while in domains less affected by such pollution, the child may remain alert, flexible, intelligent, and even creative. </div> <div> The paper analyzes the formation of instruction-induced low intelligence through distorted educational content, distorted teaching methods, low-intelligence learning habits, structural misalignment of learning, and the psychological and physiological negative responses produced by harmful instruction. It argues against fatalistic interpretations of low intelligence and proposes a more precise educational stance: recognize limitation without accepting humiliation; recognize difficulty without giving up education; recognize boundaries without denying dignity. The central contribution of this paper is the concept of instruction-induced low intelligence, which reveals that educational failure does not merely produce temporary poor performance. It may continuously manufacture functional low intelligence. </div>

Title: The Truth About Low Intelligence: The Causes and Manifestations of Biological Low Intelligence and Instruction-Induced Low Intelligence
Description:
Old theories of talent not only mystify high intelligence; they also stigmatize low intelligence.
They often reduce various forms of cognitive limitation, learning difficulty, slow understanding, and weak transfer ability to being "born inferior.
" Within the framework of the New Theory of Talent and Intelligence, this paper proposes a new analytical approach to low intelligence by distinguishing two essentially different conditions: biological low intelligence and instruction-induced low intelligence.
