FIGURIN, goddess, pre-Colombian, possibly Aztec water deity “Chalchiuhtlicue,” unglazed earthenware, height 34 cm; arms missing, part of the robe missing PROVENIENS: Count Eric von Rosen (1879-1948), Rockelsta, then in succession to the sister son Reinhold Holtermann, further in inheritance within the family of current owners The ethnographer, the research traveller, the estate owner and the philatelist Count Eric von Rosen came to participate in most expeditions to South America and Africa, including together with the museum man and research traveller Erland Nordenskiöld (1877-1932). A journey in 1901-02, funded by Eric von Rosen, went to the border region between Argentina and Bolivia, the so-called Svenska Chaco-Cordillera expedition. The figure in question is probably from this expedition. Eric von Rosen also came to cost and equip his own research trip in 1911-12 through Africa, the so-called Rhodesia Congo expedition, to study the Batwastam dam on Lake Bangveolo. Both Eric von Rosen and Reinhold Holtermann came, in the spirit of the time among Western men, to build up large collections, which later came to be donated. Today, Eric von Rosen’s ethnographic collection is at the Ethnographic Museum in Stockholm and Reinhold Holtermann’s Egyptian collection at the Mediterranean Museum.
