First Meeting of Rama and Lakshmana with Hanuman, from a Ramayana

View through Harvard Museums
In the foreground, the blue-skinned Rama (the seventh avatar of the Hindu god Vishnu) and his brother, Lakshmana, approach Hanuman, the Hindu monkey god. Hanuman sits on a white platform, wearing strands of large pearls and red shorts. Rama and Lakshmana both wear a black turban from which their long, black strands of hair fall, a white scarf, and a dhoti, a garment worn by male Hindus that consists of a piece of fabric tied around the waist and extending to cover most of the legs. Both carry a bow in one hand and an arrow in the other. Quivers filled with arrows hang from their waists. The green background bears three trees. At the top of the painting, against a white ground, is an inscription.
