Polysulfone Intracorneal Lenses

View through CrossRef
ABSTRACT: Polysulfone is a thermoplastic compound first synthesized by Union Carbide in 1965. For years it has been widely used in medicine, surgery and food packaging with the approval of the United States Food and Drug Administration (FCA). A unique characteristic of polysulfone is its high refractive index (1.633) which allows very thin optical lenses to be manufactured. Attracted by these qualities D. Peter Choyce has pioneered the use of polysulfone intracorneal lenses for the management of high refractive errors (both myopia and hyperopia). Between 1980 and 1984, 40 eyes of his patients underwent lamellar corneal dissections followed by implantation of a polysulfone intracorneal lens. An independent retrospective chart review of these 40 eyes is presented. In addition, ten patients (13 eyes) with polysulfone intracorneal lenses were independently examined. The results confirm that polysulfone intracorneal lenses are capable of correcting large ref racUve errors in humans. Future evaluation of this promising technique to assess the safety and efficacy is warranted.
