AbstractAttalos I of Pergamon (r. 241–197BCE), the son of Attalos, youngest nephew of Philetairos, and of Antiochis, daughter of Achaios (Strabo 13.4.2), was the first member of the Attalid Dynasty to assume the title of king. While Philetairos, founder of the dynasty, and his nephew Eumenes I were quite obscure dynasts still trying to consolidate their power and to affirm their independence from the Seleucids, Attalos I managed to bring the small principality of pergamon into the number of the Hellenistic monarchies. Several major events contributed to this result.
