Abstract
Mary Magdalene is a little-known figure among contemporary African Christians, aside from their encounter with her story in the gospels. As a result, there are few scholarly works on the ways in which African scholars interpret her role in Christian theology. The available works largely reject the negative depictions of Mary Magdalene as a prostitute, instead focusing on her as a faithful disciple of Jesus and the designated bearer of his resurrection message. They use her as a model and inspiration for women in the modern African contexts. In many ways, their interpretation rejects the overall neocolonial conception of Africa and African Christianity. This review of Mary Magdalene in Africa also calls for just actions to be taken with respect to both Mary Magdalene and Africa.
