Porträt Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658)

Portrait of Oliver Cromwell. The English Lord Protector of England, Scotland and Ireland is shown here as a chest pattern to the left in the half profile. His gaze roams the viewer. He wears an armor and no wig, but a mustache. In his left hand he holds a command staff. A battle rages on the right behind him and landscape is recognized. The effigy is surrounded by an oval, stone frame with cracks, even the pedestal on which the frame rests, crumbles or at least seems to have been attacked. He carries a three-line inscription on his front, but with a false date of birth Cromwell. Oliver Cromwell came into contact with Puritanism during his studies in Cambridge. He defended this strongly, so he overthrew the English king Karl I after two civil wars and gained command of the entire New Model Army. Soon after, Cromwell ruled the Commonwealth of England, from 1653 he was entitled a Lord Protector of England, Scotland and Ireland. His style of government approached a military dictatorship. The leaf was executed as a copper engraving by Johann Georg Wille. He was guided by a printout by Pierre Lombart from 1650/1653, which is now in the Duke Anton Ulrich Museum in Braunschweig. Contrary to the template, the present leaf is sideways and represents only a section of the colored and gold embellishment of Lombard. This paper also seems to be a test print: a small star is engraved on the lower right at the edge of the record, which seems to be removed from specimens in the Austrian National Library in Vienna and in the art collections of the Veste Coburg, and instead the line “AParis chez Odieuvre Md.” d “Estampes, quai de l” Ecole, vis-a-vis la Samarit.e, ala belle image.
