When Technical Faults May Signal Welfare Compromise: Reinterpreting Common Dressage Descriptors Through Equine Welfare Science

Dressage judging and ridden-horse coaching commonly describe undesirable behaviours and movement patterns using technical terms such as “tense through the back,” “behind the leg,” “behind the vertical,” and “lacks harmony” or “submission.” These descriptors are typically interpreted as deficits in training, balance, rider skill, or biomechanics and are commonly addressed through corrective schooling. However, emerging equine welfare science suggests that many of the same presentations may also reflect pain, discomfort, stress, fear, or maladaptive coping states. This narrative review examines whether common dressage descriptors may, in some cases, function as a vocabulary that masks or redirects attention away from welfare compromise by framing biologically meaningful signs as technical faults. Evidence was synthesised from peer-reviewed literature on the Ridden Horse Pain Ethogram (RHpE) [1], conflict behaviours [6], rein tension [8], oral lesions [10], restrictive head–neck postures [11], stress physiology [13], and dressage competition studies [4,6]. Strong evidence supports associations between recurrent mouth-related resistance, reduced willingness to go forward, muscular guarding, abnormal postures, and compromised welfare [1–4]. Additional studies indicate that technically successful or highly scored performances may coexist with elevated behavioural indicators of distress [4,6]. Traditional constructs such as harmony, submission, suppleness, and contact overlap conceptually with welfare-relevant observations but are not validated welfare assessment tools. The available literature supports a cautious reinterpretation of several common technical descriptors as potential prompts for welfare investigation rather than automatic biomechanical correction. Greater integration of veterinary behavioural science into judging, coaching, and rider education may reduce under-recognition of pain and stress in ridden horses.
