View through CrossRef
The most successful, respected, and influential Romantic woman poet, Felicia Hemans (1793–1835) was also a playwright whose dramatic works are relevant both to the development of her own output and to the wider context of women's historical drama. Like many other contemporary women writers, she was a keen theatregoer. In a letter of October 1820 she described the electrifying experience of seeing Edmund Kean inRichard IIIandOthello, and confessed: ‘I felt as if I had never understood Shakspeare till then.’ In addition, she was personally acquainted with several outstanding contemporary dramatists such as Joanna Baillie, Mary Russell Mitford, and Henry Hart Milman.
