Recycling of Low-carbon Materials

View through CrossRef
Recycling low-carbon materials is a crucial component of sustainable resource management and environmental stewardship. By embracing recycling as a fundamental pillar of resource management, we can contribute to the transition toward a low-carbon economy, minimize environmental impact, and foster a circular and regenerative approach to material use. The chapter begins by elucidating the importance of recycling in the context of low-carbon materials. With the pressing need to reduce carbon emissions and mitigate climate change, recycling offers a practical solution to minimize the environmental footprint associated with material production and disposal. Various recycling methods specific to low-carbon materials are examined. Mechanical techniques, such as shredding, sorting, and agglomeration, enable the recovery and reuse of these materials. At the same time, chemical approaches like pyrolysis, gasification, and depolymerization offer innovative pathways to convert them into valuable resources. Additionally, biological recycling methods, including composting, anaerobic digestion, and microbial degradation, provide sustainable options for waste management. The chapter also investigates the benefits and challenges of recycling low-carbon materials. The benefits encompass reduced greenhouse gas emissions, conservation of natural resources, energy savings, and the promotion of circular economy principles. However, challenges such as efficient collection and sorting, contamination control, technological complexities, economic viability, and policy considerations must be addressed to ensure effective and widespread implementation of recycling practices. Furthermore, the chapter highlights the need for concerted efforts from stakeholders, policymakers, and industry players to overcome challenges and fully unlock the potential of recycling low-carbon materials.
