Stereotyped Subversion: Female Identity Within Patriarchal Structures in Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey

Malayalam cinema, renowned for its authentic storytelling and nuanced social commentary, has long been a medium for exploring complex cultural and gender dynamics. In recent years, its narratives have increasingly interrogated traditional gender roles, offering fresh perspectives on empowerment and identity. The 2023 Malayalam film Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey has been widely celebrated for its bold approach, nuanced storytelling, and compelling performances, establishing it as a significant contribution to Malayalam cinema's evolving discourse on gender and representation. This paper examines the diversified portrayal of female empowerment through masculine archetypes in the Malayalam film Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey. The study found that the protagonist, Jaya, embodies traits typically associated with masculinity—such as aggression, resilience, and assertiveness—to break free from oppressive societal structures. By appropriating masculine-coded behaviours, Jaya challenges cultural norms and redefines empowerment, presenting an alternative model for feminist representation that transcends traditional binaries thereby viewers can examine whether empowerment for women must mirror masculine traits or if true agency requires a more complex, individualised redefinition.
