The activities of Right Reverend Zinovy (Drozdov) as Bishop of Kozlov, Vicar of the Tambov Diocese (1913-1918)
View through CrossRef
This examination of the biography of Bishop Zinovy (Drozdov) of Kozlov, Vicar of the Tambov Diocese, reflects the relevance of researching the history of the Russian Church in the early 20th century, the most complex period in modern history, through the lens of the work of prominent church hierarchs. A study of his ministry, particularly in the context of his interactions with Archbishop Kirill (Smirnov), Administrator of the Tambov Diocese, reveals new aspects of church life during this period.
The purpose of this study is to comprehensively examine Bishop Zinovy’s episcopal ministry as Vicar of the Tambov Diocese from 1913 to 1918, including his missionary work and participation in church and social events.
The work is based on historical-biographical and comparative-historical methods, as well as theological-anthropological and sociocultural approaches. The source material includes articles in the Tambov Diocesan Gazette, archival documents, and contemporary historical materials.
The findings demonstrate Bishop Zinovy’s multifaceted ministry, including his work preparing for the glorification of Saint Pitirim, organizing aid to the front during World War I, working with refugees and Russian prisoners of war captured by Germany, and his active participation in the church and social life of the diocese. The work also reflects his activities in managing diocesan charitable committees and funds. The study demonstrates that Bishop Zinovy’s zealous performance of his duties as a vicar prepared him for his independent service as administrator of the Tambov Diocese.
