Making tiles as one of the areas of creativity of the Vologda icon painter Dmitry Sumorokov (1738–1799)

The article, based on analysis of the receipts and payments documents, account books and ledgers of the Vologda Bishop’s House for the years 1761–1780 and the creative heritage of the Vologda icon painter Dmitry Sumorokov, makes an assumption on his involvement in the manufacture of tiles for the stoves of the Joseph building of the Vologda Kremlin. The article presents biographical data of the iconographer compiled on the basis of an analysis of a wide range of sources, a retrospective review of the stone buildings of the Vologda Bishop’s house is made. The study examines the artistic style of Dmitry Sumorokov and compares his iconographic heritage with the nature of painting on tiles. The cited archival documents make it possible to establish the composition and amount of materials purchased for the manufacture of tiles, identify the circle of persons involved in their production and determine the time of creation of the stove lining.
