PHOTODEGRADATION OF PHAEOMELANIN: AN IN VITRO MODEL

View through CrossRef
Abstract— A new in vitro model system for studying the photochemistry and photobiology of melanins in epidermal tissue has been developed. The photochemistry of phaeomelanin in this model system follows the same course as in pH 8.0 aqueous buffered solutions, i.e. photodegradation accompanied by production of superoxide radicals. These photoreactions may be effectively quenched by application of a broad spectrum sunscreen prior to irradiation.
