Portrait Louise of Great Britain, Ireland and Hanover, Queen of Denmark (1724-1751)

Portrait of Louise, Queen of Denmark. The youngest daughter of George II is shown here as a chest pattern to the right in the half profile. She looks closely at the viewer. Her clothing consists of a noble dress with small flower bouquets on the neckline and a hanging of Hermelinfell, which falls over her left shoulder. The hair is raised and decorated with beads and flowers, it carries earrings. The effigy is oval and decorated with a mussel ornament at the bottom and a loop ornament at the top. Louise of Great Britain, Ireland and Hanover married the Crown Prince Friedrich of Denmark in 1743 and became Queen of Denmark three years later. She learned Danish, had a positive effect on her husband’s government, so art and science were promoted and was very popular among the population of Copenhagen. She died during her sixth pregnancy. Jacques Aliamet, an exterminator working in Paris, has described the queen’s portrait as a copper engraving. It may have been based on John Faber’s laterally reversed paper, which is now in the British Museum in London. A copy of this paper is also part of the collection of the British Museum.
