Status, Diversity and Conservation Challenges of Reptiles in Northern India

Reptiles are important members of the ecosystem because they serve as predators, prey, and ecological indicators in both terrestrial and freshwater environments. Many different kinds of reptiles and amphibians make their homes in the many settings that can be found in northern India. Plains and marshes, as well as the borders of woods, are elements that are included in these regions. The expansion of agriculture, rapid urbanization, habitat fragmentation, climate change, and conflicts between humans and wildlife are all examples of human activities that pose a threat to the populations of reptiles. This study provides information regarding the distribution, variety, and conservation challenges that are faced by reptiles in a number of different regions of Northern India. After conducting field surveys and conducting secondary data analysis, a total of 68 species of reptiles were discovered. These reptiles belonged to 18 families and three orders. The most prevalent order was Squamata, followed by Testudines and Crocodylia, which were in close proximity to one another. It became clear that there were significant hazards, such as the degradation of habitat and unfavorable public sentiment. The research underscores the crucial need of establishing policies to maintain the long-term survival of reptiles, safeguarding their habitats, and raising awareness about the importance of reptile conservation.
