Willa and Womanhood 1927–1929

Abstract
1927–1929. This chapter describes the production of Willa’s proto-feminist study Women: An Inquiry (1925). A discussion of the book’s strengths and weaknesses is set against contemporary opinions about childbirth and infancy, most notably the teachings of Truby King. The Muir’s son Gavin is born on 29 October 1927. It is a very difficult birth, and Willa will suffer recurring gynaecological problems for years to come. She keeps a diary of Gavin’s early years (unpublished) called ‘Marmaduke’s Journal’. Gavin will prove to be a worry for his parents, who cannot always give him the attention he will need.
