ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENTS AND SPACE IN THE DECORATION OF NUREMBERG SILVER

View through CrossRef
The article is devoted to the analysis of architectural elements and spatial motifs in the decoration of the Renaissance Nuremberg silver. Architectural decoration is considered through the prism of iconographic analysis, which makes it possible not only to discover specific pictorial sources, first of all in graphics, but also to reveal the ways and mechanisms of its integration into the works of Nuremberg masters. The main attention is paid to the items of Renaissance silver from the collection of the Armory Chamber (Moscow Kremlin Museums), in the decoration of which architectural images are used in the design of various subjects and characters: allegories, personifications, virtues, seasons, signs of the Zodiac, hunting scenes and everyday life. The central monument of the article is the so-called Zodiac set of silver-gilt standing cups (or tazze) created by the Nuremberg master Heinrich Brinkmann I. All items of the set are decorated with compositions depicting astrological signs, all of them include chased images of buildings or architectural elements, often executed in an emblematic manner. The article reveals the specificity of the depiction of space in the objects, and expands and clarifies the range of possible visual influences. In addition, on the example of a number of monuments it is shown that the architectural repertoire of German goldsmiths, often inspired by the studies of drawers, engravers and plaquette masters, was quite rich and included antique monuments of various typologies
