Enemies of the Reich

View through CrossRef
Focusing on the years 1869 to 1877, this chapter examines how election battles between liberals and conservatives were shaped by the war against the Reich’s “inner enemies.” A first section examines the rise of Saxon Social Democracy in the 1870s, its particular strength in the kingdom, and efforts to repress it. The Social Democrats’ breakthrough in the 1874 Reichstag elections is highlighted, with special attention to the perceptions of combatants on both sides as local, regional, and national politics became closely intertwined. Final sections examine the consolidation of Conservative and National Liberal organizations in the attempt to wage the struggle against “subversion.” Examination of the 1877 Reichstag election campaign and outcome illustrates that Social Democracy continued to thrive in Saxony despite this repression.
