Manas Prakṛti and Manas Roga
View through CrossRef
Manas Prakṛti describes the relatively stable psychological constitution expressed through temperament, cognition, conduct, resilience, emotional style, and the relative predominance of Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas. Manas Roga refers to disturbances in which aggravated Rajas and Tamas, often interacting with Vāta, Pitta, and Kapha, impair Buddhi, Dhṛti, Smṛti, Saṃjñā, Śīla, Ceṣṭā, Ācāra, and adaptive functioning. This chapter reviews the derivation, nature, seat, guṇa, and karma of Manas; the constitutional classification of seven Sāttvika, six Rājasika, and three Tāmasika types; the clinical importance of mental constitution; the nidāna, samprāpti, and classification of mental disorders; and the general principles of management. Therapeutic discussion includes Daivavyapāśraya, Yuktivyapāśraya, and Sattvāvajaya Cikitsā, internal and external measures, Medhya Rasāyana, selected classical formulations, ethical and behavioural regulation, and Naiṣṭhikī Cikitsā. Modern psychological and neuroendocrine comparisons are presented as cautious functional parallels rather than direct equivalences. The chapter emphasizes individualized treatment, appropriate psychiatric and medical evaluation, and the complementary—not substitutive—role of Āyurvedic mental-health care.
Keywords: Manas, Manas Prakṛti, Manas Roga, Sattva, Rajas, Tamas, Mano-guṇa, Prajñāparādha, Sattvāvajaya Cikitsā, Medhya Rasāyana, Mental Constitution, Psychiatry, Āyurveda.
