Nonverbal Communication Differences

Despite wide recognition that nonverbal communication differences are a frequent factor in intercultural communication breakdowns, such differences are not often taught in language classes or teacher training programs. This entry introduces five kinds of nonverbal communication: kinesics, haptics, proxemics and territoriality, chronemics, and paralanguage. Intercultural differences in these nonverbal communication signals are discussed in relation to variations that may occur in classrooms around the world. Then, uses of nonverbal communication are introduced. The entry also discusses various skills and approaches individuals can learn to improve their nonverbal communication skills. Finally, the entry concludes with the argument that nonverbal communication training should be included in language classes and teacher training programs.
