Abstract When Dominique Bonnaud first entered the Chat Noir one autumn afternoon in 1893, he found the place as empty and imposing as a museum. ‘The swarms of artists, writers, and bohemians for whom this had long been the sole rallying point, had taken their tumultuous gatherings to other brasseries.’ One of the most frequented of these new ‘rallying points’ was the Auberge du Clou.
