“A Beautiful Domestic Character”
View through CrossRef
Lewis analyzes the book that Jefferson’s great-granddaughter published about him in 1871. Randolph’s book was designed to defend the character of Jefferson, in part, by emphasizing the love and respect that existed between members of the Jefferson-Randolph family. Randolph saw her work as a complement to Henry S. Randall’s biography of Jefferson, which had been written with the cooperation of the Jefferson-Randolph family. While Randall dealt with Jefferson’s political life, Randolph focused almost entirely on the private Jefferson, purporting to show his character through the content of the family’s affectionate letters to one another.
