“I Love the Way Janie Crawford Left Her Husbands” Zora Neale Hurston’s Emergent Female Hero
View through CrossRef
Abstract
In the past few years of teaching Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God,1 I have become increasingly disturbed by this text, particularly by two problematic relationships I see in the novel: women’s rela-tionship to the community and women’s relationship to language. Their Eyes has often been described as a novel about a woman in a folk community, but it might be more accurately described as a novel about a woman outside of the folk community.
