A method for size‐selecting lepidopterous larvae
View through CrossRef
AbstractThis paper presents a method for size‐selecting lepidopterous larvae when uniformly sized larvae are to be collected from batches of different sized larvae. A net is used as a barrier between the larvae and the substrate (e.g. soil) the larvae want to reach; only larvae below a certain size will be able to pass the net. The resultant 2 sizegroups can be further limited by additional use of appropriately sized nets. The mean weight of each net‐selected size‐group will be the same at any time, but the size‐variation is slightly larger (SD = 25%) than the size‐variation of a batch of manually size‐selected larvae (SD = 18.5%). However, manual selection is less reproducible and more laborious than net‐selection and it is difficult to maintain a constant estimate during the selecting procedure. A combination of net and manual selection, however, is even better (SD = 17.7%) because in each selected group 95% of the selected larvae will be within a range of mean weight ± 35%. More uniformly sized larvae can only be collected by weighing each larva individually.
Title: A method for size‐selecting lepidopterous larvae
Description:
AbstractThis paper presents a method for size‐selecting lepidopterous larvae when uniformly sized larvae are to be collected from batches of different sized larvae.
A net is used as a barrier between the larvae and the substrate (e.

soil) the larvae want to reach; only larvae below a certain size will be able to pass the net.
The resultant 2 sizegroups can be further limited by additional use of appropriately sized nets.
The mean weight of each net‐selected size‐group will be the same at any time, but the size‐variation is slightly larger (SD = 25%) than the size‐variation of a batch of manually size‐selected larvae (SD = 18.
5%).
However, manual selection is less reproducible and more laborious than net‐selection and it is difficult to maintain a constant estimate during the selecting procedure.
A combination of net and manual selection, however, is even better (SD = 17.
7%) because in each selected group 95% of the selected larvae will be within a range of mean weight ± 35%.
More uniformly sized larvae can only be collected by weighing each larva individually.

Possible Fossil Larvae of Staphylinidae from Kachin Amber and a Quantitative Morphological Comparison Indicate That Rove Beetle Larvae Partly Replaced Lacewing Larvae
The highly diverse group of rove beetles, Staphylinidae, displays a great morphological variety across both adult and larval stages. However, due to the often cryptic habitats of t...
