Telemental Health Modalities

This chapter reviews the different telemental health modalities from a technical and clinical perspective with regard to utility and challenges in implementation. It discusses the current state of evidence related to these different modalities. The chapter begins with a discussion of the technical basics of videoconferencing-based telemental health (VC-TMH) setup and a brief consideration of other technologies in telemental health such as store-and-forward and mobile health. It addresses the effectiveness of VC-TMH in the United States and internationally, including a discussion of recent data evaluating VC-TMH use. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the challenges facing implementation of telemental health in the United States and internationally, including policy, technical, infrastructure, financial, and patient-safety concerns.
