Becoming Señoritas

The author analyzes how and what the participants in this book learned as teenagers about the female body and what information, by contrast, was kept from them. Based on a comparative analysis of the groups of women, it is contended that even while the women willingly or unwillingly complied with the codes of conduct as they were growing up, they found creative ways to circumvent some of them. The Guadalupe of their childhood, the one they learned to love and see as mother, continues to accompany them as they transition on to adulthood. And as they mature, how they relate to Our Lady of Guadalupe becomes more holistic and complex.
