Abstract Cohabitation, defined as nonmarital romantic partners sharing a residence, has increased significantly and changed relationship development and family formation in contemporary dating relationships. Accordingly, cohabitation takes on a variety of forms and functions. This entry examines the rapid increase in rates and acceptance of cohabitation and the forms and functions of cohabitation, as well as the role that cohabitation plays in relationship development and the process of transitioning into co‐residence.
