WE-SPEAK

The article presents we-speak, a live practice of speaking and writing exclusively in the first-person plural. Originally conceived for a durational performance, this linguistic constraint has since been tested in workshops, academic settings, and everyday situations. Drawing on physics, where resonance describes the selective response of a system to an external force matching its frequency, the article deliberately borrows and displaces this concept to examine a series of exercises in and with language. Written from the perspective of a writer-artist and a choreographer, the article asks: What happens when ‘I’ and ‘you’ are suspended? What forms of resonance and responsiveness does this grammatical hack enable — or limit? Can it contribute to transforming the ‘I’ through the ‘we’?Unfolding through a series of written and spoken situations, the article analyses the subtle shifts and microphenomenological turns opened up during we-speak. For example, in an exercise called we-biography, life events are narrated collectively. Slippages within the constraint — moments when speakers revert to ‘I’ or ‘you’ — function as productive glitches, revealing the intrinsic frequency of pronouns and their capacity to distribute roles and shape perspectives. In another exercise, we-speak reconfigures relational address in love writing: accusation (‘your mistake’) shifts towards co-responsibility (‘our mistake’). The ‘we’ emerges as an expanded field of reference and as a site of oscillation between voices, bodies, and material. The article concludes by proposing we-speak as a possible linguistic practice for negotiating conflict and grief.O artigo apresenta we-speak, uma prática viva de fala e escrita que utiliza exclusivamente a primeira pessoa do plural.
Title: WE-SPEAK
Description:
The article concludes by proposing we-speak as a possible linguistic practice for negotiating conflict and grief.
