FOBO and Difficulties in Affective Relationships: What We Know

Title: FOBO and Difficulties in Affective Relationships: What We Know
Description:

This article examines the phenomenon known as FOBO (Fear of a Better Option) and its impact on affective relationships, framing it within established psychological constructs such as maximizing tendencies, choice overload, and regret aversion.
Although FOBO is not formally recognized in scientific literature, its mechanisms closely align with decision-making processes in which individuals strive to select the optimal option, often at the cost of increased dissatisfaction and indecision.

The paper highlights how an abundance of relational alternatives—especially within digital environments like online dating—intensifies cognitive overload, fosters a rejection mind-set, and reduces both relational satisfaction and commitment.
Individuals with strong maximizing tendencies are particularly vulnerable, as they engage in continuous comparison with alternative partners, experience heightened regret for unchosen options, and overinvest cognitively in decision-making.

These processes negatively affect all stages of romantic relationships, from initial formation to long-term stability, leading to lower satisfaction and higher likelihood of dissolution.
The article proposes an integrated theoretical model in which individual traits (e.
g.
, maximizing, regret sensitivity), contextual factors (e.
g.
, high-choice environments), and cognitive processes (e.
g.
, social comparison and optimization) interact to produce FOBO-related difficulties.

Special attention is given to adolescents, who are especially exposed to these dynamics.
The paper outlines clinical implications, advocating for interventions that promote satisficing strategies, tolerance of uncertainty, reduced social comparison, and healthier use of digital platforms.
Overall, the article concludes that FOBO reflects a paradox of modern choice: an excess of options undermines the capacity to form stable and satisfying relationships, requiring targeted psychological and contextual interventions.
