The Topos of the Cursing Phoenician in Valery Bryusov’s Texts

This article addresses Bryusov’s short story ‘Studnyĭ bog’ (‘Pagan deity’) and the short story ‘Ėluli, syn Ėluli’ (‘Eluli, son of Eluli’). The article discusses similarities found in these two short stories, Bryusov’s poem ‘I͡A, syn t͡sari͡a, zdes' spli͡u, Ėshmunizar’ (‘I, the king’s son, sleep here, Eshmunizar’) and the original inscription found on the coffin of a Sidonian King Eshmunazar II. This article argues that all three of Bryusov’s texts share the source of their inspiration — Eshmunazar II’s inscription. Additionally, the article discusses academic sources that might have influenced his work.
