1829 Expedition to Mount Elbrus: Ethnic and Historical-Geographical Aspects

View through CrossRef
The study aims to examine the ethnic and geographical aspects concerning the history of General Georgi Emmanuel’s 1829 expedition to Mount Elbrus. The article examines the expedition’s tasks and members, participation of the natives and describes the issues the travelers had to face. Basing on archival records and correspondence, the article reconstructs the route of this military and scientific expedition as well as clarifies the issue of the ethnicity of the first documented Elbrus summiteers. The study is novel in that it provides a detailed geographical analysis of the expedition’s route. The author concludes that the main route of the expedition passed through the Karachay territory and that it were the Karachays who guided the expedition.
