Derrick Greaves , 27 , is a painter , George Fullard , 31 is a sculptor . Both come from Sheffield , in the North of England . Both , after winning scholarship to Italy and wishing they could have stayed there , have ended by living in London , centre of the English arts , and pooling their sometimes slender resources to hire a large studio behind a garage off the Fulham Road . They are both busy preparing for one-man exhibitions ( ' if ' , as George puts it , we can find one man reckless enough to let us have one ' ) . This is a job needing a long- term patience , and subject to fits of self - criticism and depression , which the average citizen happily does not have to possess or endure .
