The Summer Shower, or Mademoiselle Par a Pluye

View through Europeana Collections
The sweeping silhouette of women's fashion around 1785 - with its wide-brimmed hat, luxuriantly billowing breastcloth and oversized buttock pad - provides more perfect rain protection than the tree. Two young gentlemen and two children gladly seek the proximity of this personified umbrella (Par a Pluye). In the second, French part of the title, there may be a critical allusion against French fashion, which is considered immoral in England.
