Reset Value and Protection Restoration in Defined Outcome Overlays

View through CrossRef
Defined outcome strategies use option overlays to reshape equity exposure into capped participation, first-loss downside protection, and a scheduled reset. Buffer ETFs package that strategy into an investor-facing vehicle, yet the marketed expiration payoff says little about the live overlay an investor holds between reset dates. We ask when a seasoned overlay becomes inefficient relative to a freshly reset one. Listed annual buffer ETF families illustrate the basic trade-off, reducing volatility relative to SPY but surrendering enough participation to trail SPY on Sharpe ratios over the same sample period. This motivates a state-level analysis rather than a standalone evaluation of ETF performance. We develop a roll-versus-hold diagnostic that weighs a seasoned overlay against a fresh reset using its placement on the original strike map, remaining tenor, and the prevailing option-market environment. In a long simulated S&P 500 buffer panel, reset value measured by average roll-versus-hold return is modest and highly state dependent. The larger effect lies in protection restoration, where a reset can curb the give-back of accrued gains after rallies and limit further losses once the original buffer has been impaired or spent. The framework is a risk-management tool for seasoned defined-outcome exposures, not a mechanical trading rule.
Title: Reset Value and Protection Restoration in Defined Outcome Overlays
