Abstract
A Performance Guide to the Songs of Jean Sibelius is a resource for singers, pianists, and music educators who wish to study and perform the songs of Finnish composer Jean Sibelius (1865–1957). The book includes phonetic, literal, and poetic translations, information about the provenance of the songs (including textual and musical analyses), information about the poets and important singers of Sibelius’s work, and lyric diction guides to singing in Finnish and Finland-Swedish. A link is provided to audio recordings, by native speakers, of the poetic texts in these languages, in the companion website. All references to scores and musical examples in A Performance Guide are to the publication of the complete works of Jean Sibelius by Breitkopf and Härtel, Series VIII, Solo Songs (1998–2005).
