The composition "Still Life with a Jug" is one of the artist's early works, but it nevertheless testifies to her painterly skill. The influences of Western painting, impressionism, which she studied in the workshops of S. Zhukovsky, K. Yon and I. Dudin, are reflected in her work through a personal filtering. Popova embraces the principles of Western currents, appropriates them and renders them in a new, more familiar context. The pure colours, the solid forms, the way she renders still life and landscape exude an intense sense of materiality while keeping all the elements depicted perfectly balanced.
