Determination of copper by iodometric titration

Iodometric titration is one of the oldest and most reliable methods used for quantitative chemical analysis. Based on a well - defined redox reaction between cupric ions and iodide ions, this classical analytical technique has retained its relevance over dec ades. It is widely applied in fields such as metallurgy for metal estimation, environmental monitoring for assessing copper contamination, and analytical chemistry education for teaching fundamental redox principles and titrimetric techniques. The method i s valued for its simplicity, accuracy, and cost - effectiveness, making it suitable for both routine laboratory analysis and instructional purposes. The present review provides a concise overview of iodometric titration with specific emphasis on copper deter mination. It summarizes the theoretical foundation of the method, its historical evolution, standard procedural steps, and major analytical applications. In addition, the review discusses inherent limitations such as interference from oxidizing agents and endpoint detection challenges, while also highlighting recent methodological refinements and modern adaptations that enhance precision, reproducibility, and applicability in contemporary analytical laboratories.
