Powis Castle, west gateway
View through Europeana Collections
For hundreds of years Powis Castle was a military
stronghold in the ongoing battles between the Welsh princes of
Powys with the English to the east and with the princes of Gwynedd
to the northwest. The castle follows the usual Norman layout of a
strong keep built on a promontory, an inner bailey and finally
surrounded by defensive walls. Over the centuries, the castle was
besieged and sacked many times. Very few medieval castles in this
area remain so intact, and it is probably to do with its crucial
position between England and Wales that Powis Castle survives today
in all its glory. This view shows the west gateway when the castle
was the seat of the Right Honourable Lord Edward
Clive.
