Porträt Friedrich Rückert (1788-1866)
View through Europeana Collections
Portrait of Friedrich Rückert. In this view, the German poet, linguist and translator Friedrich Rückert appears to the left as a chest in the three-quarter profile. He wears no wig, but thwarted hair and a coat. His gaze goes in an indefinite direction to the left.
Friedrich Rückert was considered a language genius, as he has dealt with more than 40 languages. After short lecturers in Jena, he settled in Würzburg as a private scholar. After attempts at publication in Stuttgart, he stayed in Italy in 1817, where he maintained contacts with German artists.
Carl Barth first drew the image of the poet, his personal friend, and then stabbed several times. For example, a sheet from 1833 has been handed down that is now in the State Graphic Collection in Munich. Another leaf of the present steel engraving is now in the art collections of the Veste Coburg.
Signature: After Life by C. Barth. M.s C.L.No. 478.
