Mask of painted wood. Remains of a piece of leather are nailed to the inside of the mask. By biting the leather piece, the dancer has been able to keep the mask in place. The mask depicts some type of demon, a raksasa (Indonesian: giant), or gendruwo (wooding).
The mask is a dance mask that is part of the prop of a trancedans- set called kuda kepang (Indonesian, kuda: horse, kepang: braided bamboo). In addition to the total of 14 masks, there are also 7 braided bamboo horses, 2 costumes, 2 swords and musical instruments. According to the catalogue general, the mask is acquired in Andong Sili, Pagilaran Estate.
Kuda kepang is called kuda lumping on western Java, ebleg in the southwest, jatilan in Yogyakarta and reyog or ludrug on eastern Java. Holt, Claire. 1967. p.104
