Humor satírico no cordel “O Testamento de Getúlio”, de Cuíca de Santo Amaro

The main goal of this paper is to reflect on and understand the layers mobilized to construct political representations through satirical humor in the chapbooks, a printed media with an important reference in orality, intended for the poor groups in Brazilian society, some of those commoved by the suicide of president Getúlio Vargas in 1954. We analyse satirical representations in the cordel (chapbook) published by Cuíca de Santo Amaro entitled "O testamento de Getúlio" (Getúlio's Testament) (1954), released a few months after the death of Getúlio Vargas. Referring to the famous "Carta-Testamento" (testament letter), he uses an ancient humorous genre to target enemies, mobilizing immediate political and other more lasting cultural references, linked to Catholicism and macabre of the Brazilian Northeast. To this aim, we will contextualize the political situation generated by Getúlio's suicide and the subsequent popular commotion, the role of the popular poets at that time, including Cuíca de Santo Amaro, as well as bring references to the genre he used, the jocular testaments, whose structure formats the chapbook “O Testamento de Getúlio”. Finally, we will analyze the construction of humor in this chapbook through its jocular legacies.
