A picture of the volcanic Brimstone Hill on St
Christopher's (usually known as St. Kitts) by Charles Forrest.
Brimstone Hill, so-called because of the strong smell of sulphur
emanating from underwater vents nearby, is nearly 800 feet high.
The construction of the fortress on its summit began in the 1690s
but took nearly 100 years to complete. Strategically, it offered
support to Fort Charles on the coast below, and provided defence
for the important trading town of Sandy Point and its
harbour.
